Retrospective: 3As

General Description

The objective of retrospectives is to learn from every activity or experience developed as a team. We recommend doing it after different situations and with all the members involved.

There are several ways of doing it, but the goal stays the same, the only way of being better is by reflecting and learning from mistakes and from things that went well.  The answer is never blaming someone for a not expected result, and by doing this type of activity, you can encourage a team to take risks and always improve. The feeling of being part of a team that understands their members and by not blaming someone, no matter the distance, is valuable.

Steps

Bring together all the team members involved in the activity. Be sure that each member has an account on Mural and are able to create a space on it. Save the result of the activity to build on it and always improve.

Step 1

Create three sections on the mural board.

The first one will be:  'What I appreciated during this activity was':

Reflect on all the things that went well, and you, as a team, would recommend repeating the next time.

The participation of each member should be not-mandatory, and they should ask for time to talk and share a post-it with their opinion on it. The facilitator will encourage everybody to speak during this session.

For the first part, estimate 10 to 20 minutes.

Step 2

The second part will be: ' I was annoyed by...'

Annoy is a strong word, but the goal is to include all the things that did not go well and need to change and improve for the next activity. The small and big problems that arise and the whole team can improve.

Remind everyone that this is a safe space to share, and you should focus on the action and result, more than the person who did it.

The participation of each member should be non-mandatory, and they should ask for time to share a post-it with their opinion on it. The facilitator will encourage everybody to speak during this session.

For the second part, estimate 10 to 20 minutes.

Step 3

The third part will be: ' I noticed the absence of...'

This part refers to the new things that the team can implement, and there were missing. The goal is to think out of the box or think about details or actions that would make the experience completely different.

The participation of each member should be non-mandatory, and they should ask for time to talk and share a post-it with their opinion on it. The facilitator will encourage everybody to speak during this session.

For the third part, estimate 10 to 20 minutes.
