Wall of learnings

General Description

The existence of Psychological Safety in a team means having the feeling of safeness, despite the mistakes that someone can commit. It is crucial to change the misconception of error and consider it as an opportunity to learn. We look for transforming the perception of flaws for sharing and learning, so it becomes a natural practice in the whole team and organisation.

The wall of learnings is an activity to safely share mistakes in order to, as a team, learn from it. It creates a safe and available work environment for everyone.  The goal is to eliminate, step by step, the fear of committing errors because it is just normal to do so. The mistake would be to try to hide them because then they will happen again.

Steps

This activity will have a kick-off session, and then it will be asynchronous. We recommend to monthly organise a meeting with all the team members present where you will be sharing your learnings.

There is going to be pre-work before the kick-off session. The team members need to think about learnings they will like to share with the whole team.

Step 1

For the kick-off, bring together all the team members involved in the activity.

Be sure that each member has an account on Mural and are able to create a working space on it.

Create sections on the mural board for each sub-team.

Each member will create a post-it for each learning, and it should include the following information on it:

- Team: It depends if there are sub-teams.

- Context: Tell us about the situation.

- Date: When did it happen?

- Learning: What did you learn & what would you recommend to the rest of the team (feel free to include links of additional information).

- Signed by: your name.

See the image, as a reference of how it should be the post-it.

The facilitator will ensure that everybody shares something.

For the first part, estimate 10 to 20 minutes.

Step 2

Take some time to share and exchange learnings. Encourage everybody to speak for 3 minutes, and create clusters/themes with those that are similar. Do not force things; there can be independent learnings.

In the end, encourage everybody to keep using the board, and share that they will receive an invite for another meeting to read what happened during that month.
